Madonna, born Madonna Louise Ciccone on this day in 1958, celebrates her 53rd birthday today.
In the video for her single ‘Frozen’, Mads applied mehendi to her hands and the trend became a rage with fans in America and Europe
She’s loves to practice yoga and was introduced to the age-old Indian form of exercise and meditation by singer Sting. She was so hooked, that once she even did it in the aisle of a stranded plane at Heathrow airport, much to the chagrin of her fellow passengers
In 2008, Madonna visited Mumbai and the slums where Australian author Shantaram, aka Gregory David Roberts, once lived. She was accompanied by her then-husband and British director Guy Ritchie
There was even news that the singer was set to adopt a baby from India, but nothing came of the reports, even though dancer Sandip Soparrkar was quoted saying that he had met the couple and they had spoken about how many children in India needed a good home. Guess the dancer was just shooting from the lip again as he did in the case of the royal wedding!
Madonna has also been spotted wearing colourful bindis with contemporary outfits and has also donned a sari and traditional bangles. Guess she can’t get enough of Indian wear!
The singer has been a pop icon for years, figuring on Time magazine’s list of ’25 Most Powerful Women of the Past Century’, Billboard’s ‘Hot 100 All-Time Top Artists’ and is the world’s top selling female artist according to the Guinness Book of World Records
Her singles like ‘Papa Don’t Preach’, ‘Material Girl’, ‘Like A Virgin’ and ‘Like A Prayer’ have made her a household name and she continues to churn out hits like ’4 Minutes’ and ‘Music’
She’s been famously married to actor Sean Penn and director Guy Ritchie and is currently dating a 24-year-old dancer Brahim Zaibat.
She had four children, Lourdes, Mercy, Rocco and David
The singer has been no stranger to controversy. She made headlines when she smooched Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera during the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards. In the same year she released American Life, and the original video for the single was shelved as it contained war images, deemed unpatriotic as America was with war with Iraq at the time
Whatever the case, Madonna continues to shock and awe audiences across the globe and we at in.com take the opportunity to wish her a very happy birthday!
